Cumberland, VA – On Tuesday, January 10, 2023, Cumberland County Administrator Derek Stamey presented the County’s Annual Report for 2022 to the Cumberland County Board of Supervisors. The report highlighted County efforts related to Administration & Finance, Community & Economic Development, Public Safety, Community Operations, and Parks & Recreation.
Highlights for 2022 included many successes at no additional cost to the taxpayer:
- Successfully restructuring the County’s debt to pay for the County’s new public safety radio system.
- Administratively saving $1.6 million dollars through grants, refunding debt, and performing work without the use of consultants.
- Recognized for public safety awards from the Virginia Association of Counties.
- Providing personal property tax relief through the budget process.
- Creating the “Connect Cumberland Broadband Initiative” a coordinated effort to bring $17,000,000 of private broadband investment to Cumberland County by 2024 – at no cost to its citizens.
The report highlighted the County’s 2023 efforts which include the update and completion of the comprehensive plan, economic development strategic plan, tourism plan, and a public facilities master plan.
Capital projects slated to be completed include the Randolph Fire Station renovation, three new parks, the Courthouse/State Park connector trail, Administration and Courthouse Complex security enhancements, and multiple improvements to the Public Utilities system.
During 2023 Cumberland County officials will continue their focus on addressing the County’s status as a food desert. 2022 brought the addition of Dollar General Market in the central part of the County. This compliments the Pine View Bulk Food and Deli store located on the southern end of the County which opened in 2018. Efforts to expand grocery options are ongoing.
Brian Stanley, Chairman of the Cumberland Board of Supervisors said, “the Board of Supervisors has clearly shown a commitment to fiscal responsibility, public safety, and meeting our obligations in funding the public school system. Economic development and quality of life is a priority for the Board. In 2022 our efforts focused on broadband expansion, seeking additional grocery store options, and the development of outdoor recreational spaces. We will look to build upon these successes in 2023.
